The chapter in World History that I enjoyed most this year was actually the chapter that we just finished which was on World War 1. This chapter was an adventure for me because it was something that I felt took me back into that time period instead of just feeling like I was listening to a lecture. The most motivating part of this chapter was to learn about people in the war, what they had to go through, what the women had to do, and lastly the fierce competition between the nations in Europe. Did you know that when the war was over the allied powers came together and told Germany that under the Treaty of Versailles they would have to accept blame for starting the war & remove forts and other defenses from the Rhineland, its western region bordering France? Lastly Germany would have to pay huge reparations or payment for war losses, to the Allies. (JUST THOUGHT THAT IT WAS AN INTERESTING FACT!!)

Some of the most interesting things that I learned in this chapter was that before the war the started all of the nations in Europe had large competition, but the most dominate part of the beginning of the chapter was that Germany had already had a large nation but it’s ruler, Wilhelm 2nd insisted on building a bigger modern navy to compete with Great Britain. Another thing that struck a nerve in my brain was when Serbians decided to kill the Archduke (Francis Ferdinand) of Austria – Hungary. This was the beginning of the war. Austria – Hungary wanted to punish the Serbians but since the Triple Alliance & the Triple Entente were formed Russia had no choice but to step in and help the Serbians. At the beginning of the war in August 1914, Germany had a plan to defeat France in six weeks. They had sent an army through Belgium (a neutral country) and into France. Do you know what the most used way of war was? Your answer is Trench Warfare. Trench warfare was when armies dug deep trenches, or ditches, to shelter their troops. They strung barbed wire in front of the trenches to keep out the enemy. When attacking, soldiers had to crawl out of the trench and move toward enemy soldiers, who were waiting in their own trenches. On the contrary women were fighting too but most of them were teaching soldiers how to use gas masks, driving ambulances, working in factories, and growing crops to feed everyone. Women also served as nurses. Sometimes this brought them close to the front lines. Like the men, these women often put their own lives in danger to save another’s.

Some of the many new skills that I have learned throughout the year were map skills, learning how to study on your own instead of study with a study guide; I also learned how to use the smart board for projects with and without someone else to help me. Going deeper into detail we had worked on map skills in the beginning of the year with our student teacher Mr. Kurnz. He taught our class how to make an educated guess on how far one thing was from another and also how to make the guide make sense. Mr. Cupples has taught us how to study on our own without using a study guide by giving us an outline of nothing but questions that we have to fill out to be able to study correctly. Lastly we were taught how to use the smart board for our projects. By doing all of what he helped us with he has made middle school seem a lot easier.

I can use the knowledge that I have learned to the real world by remembering what I have learned for the most important part but another thing is that I can help other people when it is the most important. Another way that I can use this information in the real world would with the studying. When you know how to take good notes and you also pay attention in class the rest of your life would be much easier.
